Re: Delegate Alfonso Lopez’ ties to Immigration Centers of America
We, community members, local organizations, groups, and allies of the migrant community in Virginia, have been disheartened and outraged to learn of the news that Delegate Alfonso Lopez of the 49th District has been receiving wages from Immigration Centers of America (ICA).
It was revealed that from 2013 to 2016 Delegate Alfonso Lopez received at least $15,000 in wages from Immigration Centers of America (ICA). ICA operates the largest immigration detention center in Virginia, ICA-Farmville, which is the epicenter for those detained in Virginia and Washington D.C. We, as members of the migrant community, have experienced heartbreak and trauma at the doors of this detention center.
During the time that Alfonso Lopez was receiving money from ICA under the Obama administration, the largest number of people were detained and deported from this country. In 2011, Anibal Ramirez of Woodbridge died while in ICE custody at ICA-Farmville. Despite being aware of the direct threat that ICA poses to the migrant community, Alfonso Lopez chose to work for this company. He continues to refuse to completely cut ties with ICA. We cannot stand for this.
We, community members, local organizations, groups and allies of the migrant community in Virginia demand that Delegate Alfonso Lopez:
(1) Cut ALL ties to Immigration Centers of America. Providing public proof that he no longer maintains a relationship with private prison companies.
(2) Pay reparations to the migrant community. By way of a bond fund for those directly impacted by detention centers.
(3) Publicly apologize to the people of Virginia. Specifically to those affected by ICA-Farmville.
Until these demands are met, we believe that Alfonso Lopez is not a true “champion” nor that he properly represents the migrant or Latinx community.
We will hold Delegate Alfonso Lopez accountable for this abuse of the migrant community, because we believe an attack against one of us, is an attack against all of us.
